Laser Hair Removal – Before and Aftercare

Safe results through experience, preparation, and follow-up

Consultation Comes First

Before beginning your laser journey, a personal consultation is always required.

During this visit we will:

  • Review your medical history and current skin condition.

  • Explain how the treatment works and what results you can expect.

  • Assess your hair and skin type to create the right treatment plan.

  • Answer your questions and give you tailored advice.

All laser treatments must be documented, and your records are securely stored for 5 years in line with Strålskyddsmyndigheten and GDPR regulations. We use a protected booking system to safeguard your information. If this feels sensitive, please let us know during your consultation.

This step is essential for your safety and ensures that your treatment follows both Strålskyddsmyndigheten’s regulations and Alma Lasers’ clinical guidelines.

Before Your Treatment

To ensure the best and safest results, please follow these guidelines before your laser session:

  • Avoid tanning – Do not use tanning beds, or expose the treatment area to strong sunlight for at least 4 weeks before your session.

  • No tanning products – Self-tanners and bronzing lotions must be avoided on the treated area for at least 2 weeks prior. These can interfere with the laser and increase the risk of burns or uneven results.

  • Shave the area – Shave the treatment area 24 hours before your appointment (unless instructed otherwise). Do not wax, pluck, or use hair removal creams for at least 4 weeks beforehand. IF shaving is an absolute no go for you then mention this at your consultation, we have several alternative options that can help you still start with laser.

  • Skin must be clean – Arrive with clean skin. Please avoid lotions, oils, deodorants, perfumes, or makeup on the treatment area.

  • Medications & health – Inform us of any new medications, supplements, or health changes. Some medicines increase light sensitivity and must be discussed before treatment.

After Your Treatment

Laser can make your skin more sensitive, so good aftercare is essential:

  • Redness & warmth are normal – Slight redness or warmth may appear for a few hours. A cool compress or soothing aloe vera gel can help.

  • Be gentle – Avoid hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, or intense workouts for 24–48 hours.

  • No plucking or waxing – Shaving is fine between sessions, but don’t wax, tweeze, or use epilators since they remove the follicles the laser needs to target.

  • Skin products – Avoid harsh scrubs, retinoids, acids, or perfumed products on the treated area for 2–3 days.

Sun Safety Guidance

After laser, your skin is more sensitive to UV light. Protecting it from the sun is essential for both safety and long-lasting results:

  • SPF every day – Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily on the treated area, even in winter or cloudy weather.

  • Reapply often – Reapply sunscreen every 2–3 hours when outdoors.

  • Cover up – Use loose, protective clothing and a wide-brimmed hat when possible.

  • Avoid direct sun – Limit sun exposure, especially 1–2 weeks before and after each session.

These steps help prevent pigmentation changes, irritation, and ensure your results stay consistent.

Important Safety Notes

In Sweden, laser hair removal is regulated by Strålskyddsmyndigheten (SSM). All treatments must be performed under safe conditions, using approved equipment and qualified staff.

Your safety is always our top priority – we follow both Swedish regulations and Alma Lasers’ clinical guidelines to ensure every treatment is carried out with the highest standard of care.

FAQ

How Often Should I Wax?

How often should I wax so I feel truly smooth and avoid irritation?

Everyone’s hair grows at different speeds, but here are general science-based guidelines that tend to give the best results:

Face (upper lip, chin, cheeks) Every2–4 weeks: Facial hair grows quickly and shows sooner.

Underarms & Bikini area Every 3–4 weeks: This gives hair enough time to grow long enough for waxing to remove it properly, reducing the “stubble” feeling.

Legs & ArmsEvery4–6 weeks: Slower growth here allows for longer gaps without losing smoothness. Hair grows differently on your lower legs than your thighs, we recommend planning based on their individual cycles.

Back & Chest Every4–6 weeks: Sometimes up to 6–7 weeks if hair growth is slower.

Why these intervals matter:

  • Waiting at least 3 weeks means more hairs are long enough for the wax to grip, so you feel smoother for longer.
  • Longer intervals give your skin more recovery time, reducing irritation and the chance of ingrown hairs.
  • Over time, regular waxing often makes hair grow back finer and less dense.

For sensitive skin:
If your skin gets easily irritated, or if you’ve had issues like ingrown hairs after waxing, we recommend extending your interval to 6–8 weeks. This gives your skin more rest. You might also want to consider laser hair removal. It’s often the gentlest long-term method for the skin.

These are all suggestions, you know your hair growth best and we are here to help guide you if you need support planning.

Is Laser Hair Removal painful?

Alma Lasers, that developed Soprano Ice Platinum (which is the machine we use for our treatments) designed the machine to have contact cooling built directly into the hand piece. A feature that makes the skin chilled and comfortable during the full length of any treatment.

The reason it works so well is because your skin mostly feels the negative 3 degrees the cooling system uses to counter the heat from the laser as it works.

Traditional Alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers typically use cryogen spray or air cooling to reduce heat on the skin. These systems often have the cooling further away from the skin, making it somewhat less effective.

As for the actual treatment metod Soprano Ice Platinum uses SHR technology, which gradually heats the hair follicle by delivering low-energy pulses at a high repetition rate. A method that minimises discomfort and reduces the risk of burns.

In contrast, Alexandrite and Nd:YAG lasers use a single-pulse delivery method, where the laser energy is released in one high-intensity pulse per shot. This approach means more direct heat at once, potentially leading to a higher risk of discomfort and sensitivity during the treatment and the recovery process.

How does laser actually work?

Laser targets the hair follicle with light, which turns into heat. The pigment in the follicle absorbs this heat, damaging it so it can’t grow new hair.

The catch? Laser only works on hairs in their active growth phase. Since not all hairs grow at the same time, treatments are spaced a few weeks apart to catch each one when it’s ready.

We use Soprano ICE Platinum for our treatments, a laser hair removal system known for being gentle, effective on all skin tones, and virtually pain-free. Instead of sharp zaps, it gradually warms the skin, making the treatment feel more comfortable.

Laser hair removal used to work best on light skin with dark hair, since the contrast made it easier for the laser to target the pigment. Today’s advanced technology is safer and more effective for a wider range of skin tones and hair types.

Over time, and with repeated treatments, targeted areas show visibly reduced hair growth.
